What Really is that State Youth Council?

By Jordan Tupper, Former SYC President

The State Youth Council (SYC) is one of the primary ways of the Maine conference supports youth in worship and in fellowship. It's mission is to bring together the Maine Conference youth for worship, socializing, and fun. SYC acts as a statewide Youth group that allows students without a church youth group in their hometown to grow in their Christian faith. All that is required of a SYC member is an affiliation with a U.C.C. church and to be a high school student. It's existence is due to the dedication of it's own, high school students, who participate annually in an election selecting the Executive Committee of 9 students. Three advisors who graciously volunteer their help for three years assist these nine in the procedures and by-laws of the council.

Every year the State Youth Council holds three official meetings that held throughout the year. Beach Day, held during the month of August, brings the youth for a day of fun in the summer sun. Later during the fall, Fall Convention is held at Pilgrim Lodge, a peaceful lakeside camp owned and operated by the Maine Conference. Lastly, during the school year's February vacation, all of SYC gathers at a church somewhere in the state, named appropriately, "Midwinter". For three days, SYC participants enjoy a great weekend of snowy-white winter in Maine.
